The Fish we catch

Ft Myers Snook Fishing The Snook is a powerful fish and a thrilling catch, size range from 24” to 50 lbs. That is one of the reasons why it is one of the most sought after and prized game fish to catch. Once hooked it’s strength and speed is hard to compare to any other game fish of its size.

Tarpon  The Tarpon is a large, hard fighting fish and is judged by many to be the worlds most exciting game fish. Once it feels the hook being set it begins the spectacular display of frequent, twisting, acrobatic leaps into the air to free itself from the hook. Most Tarpon landed are between 25 to 80 pounds on average but can range from a few inches in length to about 300 pounds. Tarpon are found in the western Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, the west coast of Central America and the coast of northwest Africa. They prefer water temperatures in the 74 – 88° F range. Fort Myers Tarpon Fishing

Ft Myers, Florida Fishing Redfish The Redfish has a reddish overall coloration and one or more dark spots at the base of the tail. It feeds at the bottom on crustaceans and mollusks. It also takes small fish, especially mullet. The usual adult weight is less than 40 pounds but can reach into the 90-pound range. The Redfish is a super-challenging opponent on the grass beds and flats of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. The shallower the water, the more thrilling the fight.

Grouper (Gag) This species of grouper has brownish gray in color with dark worm-like markings on sides. Gag Grouper are often confused with Black Grouper. Adults are found offshore over rocks and reefs; juveniles occur in sea grass beds inshore and are often caught in the inshore waters in the Pine Island Sound. They typically range form 18” to 36”. Fishing in Ft Myers Speckled Sea Trout A sturdy fish with an elongated, streamlined body. The mouth is large with a larger lower jaw and an upper jaw with two prominent canine teeth. The dorsal fin is divided by a deep notch. The Spotted Seatrout is silvery in color with olive green tints on the back. It has a lateral line which runs from just behind the gills to the tail, above which are numerous black spots, which extend onto the second half of the dorsal fin. The fish prefers water temperatures in the 65 to 75 degree F. range. They can be found in just about any inshore or near shore waters. From the surf and jetties, grass flats and shell banks to inland coastal rivers. The average fish ranges in size from 14" to 20" and can weigh from about a pound up to five pounds. Larger fish can be found and the world record is 17 pounds 7 ounces.

Bull Shark Bull sharks are aggressive, common, and usually live near high-population areas like tropical shorelines. They are not bothered by brackish and freshwater, and even venture far inland via rivers and tributaries. Bull sharks get their name from their short, blunt snout, as well as their pugnacious disposition and a tendency to head-butt their prey before attacking. They are medium-size sharks, with thick, stout bodies and long pectoral fins. They are gray on top and white below, and the fins have dark tips, particularly on young bull sharks. Size: 7 to 11.5 ft and weigh 100 to 500 lbs Inshore Saltwater Fishing

Jack Crevalle Jack Crevalle One of the memorable catches for a saltwater angler is their first Jack. The crevalle tend to stay inshore or near offshore and can be caught in both salt and freshwater rivers around florida and other southern states. Jacks are often seen under diving birds making a commotion on the water surface while feeding on bait. Jacks tolerate a wide range of salinities; schools corner a school of baitfish at the surface and feed with commotion that can be seen at great distances; feeds mainly on small fish; peak spawning occurs OFFSHORE from March through September. Sizes range form 12” to 40”

Ladyfish Lady fish are cousins to the larger (much larger) tarpon. They have some similarities to the tarpon but less exaggerated and smaller. I'm not sure what a terminal mouth means but the Florida Wildlife Commission biologist says the have one. Ladyfish have a slender body with small scales that come off very easily when boated. Their last dorsal ray is slightly elongated on a single dorsal. Ladyfish have a small pointed head and no teeth. Sizes range form 10” to 30”. Ladyfish

Bluefish Bluefish Blue fish travel in large schools, following baitfish, they can be cannibalistic and all members of a given school are usually about the same size Blues are often found spawning offshore in spring and summer. Bluefish are NOT picky eaters and will devour almost anything thrown at them including but not limited to dead bait, live bait, spoons, lures, fingers and loose clothing. Blues (as they're often referred to) are capable of inflicting serious bites to an angler and if you observe them they are looking for the opportunity to bite the hand that's taking them off the hook. Blue fish are not the best table fare because of their dark oily meat.

Spanish mackerel are schooling fish that migrates northward in spring and return to southerly waters when water temperature drops below 70 degrees F. Spanish mackerel spawn OFFSHORE, spring through summer and feed on small fish and squid. Sizes rang from 12” to 36”. Spanish Mackerel

Jewfish Jewfish Found near shore often around docks, in deep holes, and on ledges while their young often occur in estuaries, especially around oyster bars and currents. These groupers are more abundant in southern Florida than in northern waters and especially in the Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor area. Jewfish Spawn over summer months and have a lifespan of 30 to 50 years. These fish feed on crustaceans and other fish. Sizes rang form 10 lb to 600 lb. Goliath grouper, commonly called jewfish, are totally protected from harvest in Florida waters.

Mangrove Snapper have dark brown or gray with reddish or orange spots in rows along the sides and a dark horizontal band from snout through eye on young fish; two conspicuous canine teeth at front of upper jaw and the dorsal fins have dark or reddish borders with no dark spot on side underneath dorsal fin. Mangrove snapper can be found around inshore tidal creeks, mangroves, and grass beds. They are a great table fare and the sizes range form ½ lb to 4 lb inshore. Mangrove Snapper

Sheepshead Sheepshead A large porgy. It reaches a maximum weight of about 20 pounds. It’s coloration is silvery to yellowish white, with an olive-brown back and five or six dark slightly diagonal bars along each side. It is found close inshore, often in the brackish zones of estuaries. It uses it’s flat long teeth to crush mollusks and crabs and to scrap barnacles from rocks and pilings.
